The multistage fitness test, also known as the beep test or Yo-Yo test, is a physical endurance test commonly used to assess cardiovascular fitness and stamina.
The test involves running back and forth between two markers placed 20 meters apart. The test starts with a slow pace and gradually increases in speed after each level, signaled by beeps. Participants must reach the markers before the next beep sounds. As the test progresses, the time between beeps decreases, making the pace faster.
The test is designed to measure aerobic capacity (the ability to sustain activity over a long period) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max), which indicates how efficiently the body can use oxygen during prolonged physical activity. It is widely used in various settings, including schools, sports teams, and fitness assessments, to gauge an individual's endurance level. As participants progress through the stages, the intensity increases, and only those who maintain the required pace for each level can continue. The test ends when the participant can no longer keep up with the pace or fails to reach the marker before the beep.
